Mama Kits

KMET supplies birth/delivery kits christened Mama Kits to public health facilities in low income settings in Western Kenya in an intervention that aims at increasing skilled/hospital deliveries by lessening the cost barrier.

The Mama kit consists of a pair of gloves, surgical blade, soap, gauze and a cord clump which are used by the facility to attend to an expectant mother at no cost. According to statistics many women still live at a considerable distance from health facilities, cannot afford to pay fees for maternal services, and/or face other barriers to accessing skilled delivery. Overally only 44% of births in Kenya are delivered under the supervision of a skilled birth attendant (Calverton, Maryland: KNBS and ICF Macro, 2010).
