The objectives of KMET Complex are encapsulated in three broad headings: increasing access to sustainable quality RH information, services, and facilities; provision of sustainable HIV/AIDS care and support; and expansion of clinical and youth-friendly services.
More specifically, KMET Complex will strengthen KMET’s capacity to:
Expand access to quality RH, services, information and facilities;
Intensify provision of care and support to the HIV/AIDS infected and affected;
Sustain community-level reproductive health programs through increased access to micro finance service and facilities
Provide facilities for conferencing, meetings and, training for RH and development organizations and institutions;
Enhance provision of community-level clinical and youth-friendly services; and
Expand production of enriched Nutriflour to contribute to improvement of the nutritional status of PLWHA and Children less than 5 years (CU5) in Western Kenya
KMET Complex is envisioned as a ‘supermarket’ where underserved communities will access all it entails to enjoy a healthy life; physical, mental, emotional and social well being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity, in all matters relating to the reproductive health system and to its functions and processes. Through KMET’s partnership with Planned Parenthood Association of Bucks County (PPABC), Jim and Enid Corkran generously contributed the initial fund that has been used to purchase the plot and construct the first phase of the building. The Corkran Integrated Medical Centre named after the Corkrans will serve the poor communities living in the Slums of Obunga, Manyatta and its environs.
KMET Complex is a model for integration of RH into the core business of development in developing countries.
Establishing KMET Complex will provide structures and facilities to effectively address the reproductive health, population and sustainable development problems specific to western Kenya and the local community in particular. The Centre is expected to strengthen the capacity of KMET to contribute towards the process of achieving MDG 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6 which are, respectively, to halve extreme poverty and hunger; Achieve universal primary education; empower women and promote equality between women and men; reduce maternal mortality by three quarters; and reverse the spread of diseases especially HIV/AIDS and malaria.
Since the Cairo conference in 1994, non-governmental organizations have been increasingly under pressure to provide fully integrated reproductive health programs. KMET will demonstrate, through the Complex, what integration means in practice and how a community-led NGO should go about it. Establishment of KMET Complex will activate substantial and tangible benefits to the livelihoods of underserved communities in western Kenya. KMET Complex will also exhibit ways of revamping Kenya’s existing reproductive health systems which has not been doing quite well.
It is expected that peers in reproductive health sector will be obliged to initiate systemic improvements following competition ensuing from establishment of KMET Complex. There should be quality Care in family planning, comprehensive RH care, laboratory services, maternal child health services, focused antenatal care, VCT and PMTCT as communities endeavor to be involved in KMET Complex’s innovative programs.
By encouraging communities to participate in integrated population, reproductive health and sustainable development programs, KMET Complex will also help stem the cycle of poverty currently afflicting the local communities and the country. Training offered at the centre will ensure availability of private, and community based providers equipped with capabilities relevant to demands in the modern reproductive health sector.
Each of the KMET Complex units will operate as one of KMET’s centers of excellence. The units will focus on educating and informing communities as well as conducting, documenting and disseminating research in specific areas of RH and development relevant to Western Kenya. KMET board will audit the performance of KMET Complex on a regular basis to ensure conformance with KMET standards.
