KMET Health Complex Opening Ceremony - 23rd July 2010
K-MET took yet another historic gigantic step on Friday, July 23, 2010 when we dedicated our beautiful new Health Complex in front of over 500 community members, politicians, government officials, religious leaders, partners KMET Board, Staff, and volunteers.
The building was dedicated by Hon. Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o, and blessed by Father Vitalis, Catholic Priest and Rev. Titus Ouma Anthony from Anglican Church. Councilor Tom Ogola, of Kondele Ward served as the emcee of the event. Dr. Solomon Orero, the K-MET Board Chairman spoke on behalf of the board while Monica Oguttu, K-MET’s Executive Director summarized the history of K-MET from it humblest beginning in August 1996 where she was the only staff, until the present with 50 staff and over 1,600 active volunteers. And from one province to five provinces and from one project to 6 projects. Mrs. Oguttu appreciated the Ministry of Health for their strong and continued support to K-MET and the impoverished people we serve.
Mrs. Oguttu ended her remarks by informing everyone that the Health Complex is only Phase One, soon to be followed by the relocation of K-MET’s Nutriflour Production Facility, A youth Center for our Youth for Youth Programs, Community Library, and computer lab and training/conference facilities. And AJWS representative Ms. Caro Belo in her speech confirmed their support to help in constructing the Nutrition production unit receiving applause from the crowd. All the donor representatives who were present had all the praise for KMET’s performance including Ms. Kinaro representing Planned Parenthood Association of America who was the first donor from 1996 – 2006.
Mrs Oguttu then informed the community that the clinic (Corkran Health Center) named after the family behind the success story will be officially opened on August 26, 2010 by representatives from Bucks Country in USA who have been KMET’s key partners/supporters. Dr. Matasi representing KMET Network who was also with Mrs. Oguttu when she got the donation from the Corkrans, appreciated the way the funds have been used and echoed his appreciation to the family for supporting such a noble project.
Lastly Florence Olang’o one of K-MET’s Community Health workers who gave the vote of thanks had the crowd cheering when she told the government and elected officials that the people in the audience were voters and they were here to express their need for more and continued support. Wonderful entertainment was provided by the girls from K-MET’s Sisterhood for Change Program who sang songs from their recent CD, and In addition a group of Community Health Workers entertained the guests with songs and dances.This Phase one houses an array of services including a Community Bank, Medical Clinic, Laboratory, Pharmacy, and Administrative and Program Offices.
The building is strategically located opposite Obunga along Kondele-Nyawita By-Pass, close to the urban slum areas of Manyatta, Nyamasaria, Nyalenda,and Obunga which surround Kisumu City.
