Women Alive Medical Camp, Breast Cancer and Cervical Cancer Campaign

Cervical cancer
According to the UN World Health Organization (WHO), some 2,635 Kenyan women are diagnosed with cervical cancer every year, with 2,111 dying from the disease, making it the most prevalent cancer among women in the country. About 38.8 percent of women in the general population are estimated to harbour cervical human papillomavirus (HPV) infection - a leading cause of cervical cancer - at any given time.
Pap smear tests - which check for changes in the cells of the cervix - are available and affordable at most district health facilities in Kenya, but according to WHO, fewer than 6 percent of women access them.

Breast cancer
Breast cancer is one of the leading killers in the country. It is also the second most frequently diagnosed form of cancer among women in Kenya. According to the Nairobi Cancer Report, although prevalence of the disease here are relatively higher due to co infection with HIV as compared to compared to the developed countries, breast cancer mortality in Kenya is relatively high.
An estimated 80– 90 percent of the breast cancer patients are discovered within stage 3 or 4 of the disease. Doctors advise that conducting regular self breast examination especially if one notices any suspicious growth on their breasts or armpits is vital for early detection.

Goal
The goal of the WOMEN ALIVE, Medical Camp is tosensitize & educate the community on breast and cervical cancers to improve early identification, diagnosis and management. The medical Camp links up with a special Day - African Women's Day on July 31. We have delayed the activities to have our partners from the USA join us. Therefore our medical camp day will be held in August 26th 2010.
During the camp there will be screening of women using VIA and Colposcopy by a team of medical experts. A medical team from the USA will implement a medical workshop in collaboration with our medical trainers.
