K-MET Community Clinic

The K-MET clinic serves communities in West Kolwa and Central Kolwa locations in the suburbs of Kisumu town by providing both quality preventive and curative services. West Kolwa and Central Kolwa locations have a combined population of more than 240,680 comprising of 125,000 households.  The clinic addresses lack of health infrastructure, including human resources for service provision in the target area.

At the time of its establishment in 2000 long distances to health facilities was affecting maternal health care and worsened by poor transport infrastructure to referral services for emergencies and preventing mortality.  The clinic’s activities include provision of antenatal services; child welfare clinic; outpatient treatment; family planning services; an outpatient therapeutic programme and laboratory services.

The clinic is also a referral center for the Home-Based Care (HBC) program, which deals mainly with the persons living with HIV and AIDS. Usually, the HBC team conducts outreaches, home visits, gives health education to the community on the opportunistic infections and preventive measures, and subsequently refers clients requiring treatment to the clinic.

The K-MET Clinic is one of the implementation sites for the OTP program. The OTP, which is a Nutrition Project component deals mainly with severely malnourished and moderately malnourished children of ages 6 – 59 months. The OTP is a tripartite intervention implemented between K-MET, MoH and Concern Worldwide.
