Post Abortion Care
K-MET’s flagship PAC project has been active since 1996. PAC actively recruits and trains new providers, both physicians and mid-level providers (clinical officers, nurses), in 5 of the 8 provinces in Kenya: Nyanza, Western, Eastern, Rift Valley and Coast. KMET pioneered training in use of manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) in 1995 as a safer, effective, and more accessible alternative to the traditional surgical dilation and curettage (D&C) procedure. Training providers in MVA, has increased the accessibility, affordability, availability and acceptability of PAC for thousands of Kenyan women and has saved countless lives. K-MET currently has over 300 providers enrolled in its PAC network (PACNET) which is still growing.
K-MET implements a medication uterine evacuation (MUE) project introduced in 2007 as an option in safe uterine evacuation. The MUE project is supported by Venture Strategies for Health & Development (VSHD) and Planned Parenthood Association of Bucks County and has the same overarching goal as PAC In 2008, K-MET scaled PAC services with funding from the Safe Abortion Action Fund (SAAF) of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF). The project’s goal is to contribute towards reduction of maternal mortality and morbidity from unsafe abortion. Primary beneficiaries are 500,000 rural women of reproductive age and their partners in of Nyanza, Rift Valley and Western provinces. SAAF is being implemented in collaboration with Ministry of Health, PACNET members and community-based service providers (CBSPs). SAAF has four expected outcomes:
